Fri, July 6, 2007: ULLLA 8 - DLLA 6 -- DLL American’s Tournament Ends in a Thriller

DLL American’s tournament ended with a thrilling game, ultimately won by Upper Loudoun American on a two run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. (The 10/11 year old all-star tournament this year is a double elimination tournament).  DLL fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, as Upper Loudoun’s clean up hitter knocked a three run homer over the left field fence.  In the second, Upper Loudoun added 2 more runs.  Just when things looked most grim for DLL, the team staged a gritty rally, scoring 5 runs to tie the game. The team’s comeback was led by hits by Alex S., Shane L., and Matt A.  With the bases loaded, both Alex I. and Luke K. drove in runs with walks on 3-2 pitches.  Matt M. knocked in another run with great situational hitting, as he hit a ground ball up the middle to plate a runner.  Matt A. then stole home for the third time in the tournament.  DLL held Upper Loudoun again, and took the lead when Shane L. stole home.  Doug P. nearly drove in more runs with a shot to left, but it was snagged by Upper Loudoun’s left fielder. It was the second time that ULL’s left fielder had made an inning-ending catch in deep left field (in the first inning, Matt A. nearly drove in two runs with a shot to the corner).  Upper Loudoun scratched out a tying run in the fourth; except for an amazing play at SS by Mitchell B., ULL would have taken the lead.  In the bottom of the fifth, the number 8 hitter in ULL’s lineup lifted one over the left center field fence.  Upper Loudoun’s relief pitcher held DLL to only 1 run over the last 3 and 1/3 innings, a clutch performance that helped his team to advance and ended DLL’s tournament.  The tournament director complimented the team by saying they were well coached and narrowly missed advancing deeper in the tournament.

Thu, July 5, 2007: DLLA 7 - LSLL 0

DLL American bounces back with an 11-0 shutout of Loudoun South.  DLL was led by pitcher Mitchell B. with 3 1/3 innings of 2 hit pitching.  He had 5 strikeouts with only 1 walk.  The shutout was concluded by 1 2/3 innings of excellent pitching by Doug P., and then a quick 4 pitch inning from Alex I.  The DLL defense was superb, led by Alex S. with 5 putouts.  DLL’s hitting was led by Luke K., whose triple sparked a second inning rally for 5 runs.  Alex I. also had a triple in the inning, with 2 RBIs. His hit was followed by run-scoring hits by Alex S. and Doug  P. In the game, Kyle P. had 2 RBIs, Shane L. had 2 singles, Matt A. scored 2 runs, and Chase B. worked 2 walks.  Matt M. chipped in with a key walk in the second inning rally, and Nick S. contributed solid defense.  A great win for DLL!

Tue, July 3, 2007: CLLLA 14 - DLLA 7

The top of the first started off shaky, with DLL American letting in five runs.  Central Loudoun’s second hitter launched a home run over the central field fence, and the next hitters were equally impressive.  In the bottom of the first, DLLA pitcher Shane L. got a nice double. Shortstop Mitchell B. rammed a hard single to left field, scoring Shane for the first DLLA run of the game. The inning ended at that, with Central Loudoun up to bat again for the second inning. They were held at one run (on the second home run of the game by Central Loudoun’s #2 hitter) as pitcher Shane L. started to hit his stride.

Catcher Matt A. got a walk at the start of the inning. He stole second, and went to third on Kyle’s sharp single to left.  Matt A. then stole home. The inning ended at 6-2, Central Loudoun still leading. The score was still 6-2 when DLLA stepped up to bat in the bottom of the third. First baseman Alex I. hit a strong double off the fence in right field, just missing a home run, and scoring Mitchell B. The inning ended 6-3.  In the fourth, Doug P. caught a nice hit to third for the second out, one of Doug’s half a dozen put outs at third base. Shane L. caught the third out, ending the top of the fourth.  In the bottom of the fourth, Matt M. got an infield single, hustling to first base to narrowly beat the throw from shortstop.  Kyle P. came in as a pinch runner, and ultimately scored DLLA’s fourth run.  DLLA had closed the score to 6-4.

At the top of the fifth, Nick S. replaced Shane L. as pitcher.  Unfortunately, Nick was hit in the chest by a blistering line drive. He regained composure, and bravely pitched to the next several batters.  However, Central Loudoun’s hitting eye had returned, and at the end of the inning the score was 14-4.  Chase B. came on to close out the inning, and also pitched a scoreless and excellent sixth.  DLLA fought to narrow the lead, getting three runs.  Luke K. got one of his two walks, followed by an infield single by Alex I. Matt A. then slammed a double to the fence in left center, knocking in two runs.  Matt M. used his keen eye to work a walk, and then Matt A. again stole home.

Unfortunately, the game ended at 14-7, in favor of Central Loudoun American. DLLA’s next game is against their old friends from Loudoun South.

Mon, July 23, 2007 - VA State Tournment Game #4: Grottoes 7 - DLL American 4

DLL American was eliminated from the state tournament on Monday by a pesky Grottoes team.  Grottoes never hit the long ball, but managed seven singles and two doubles in the first two innings to post a 7-0 lead.  K. McCormack came in relief to start the third inning and shut them down giving up only three hits the rest of the way.  Dulles rallied for a run in the third on a deep homer to left by M. Lord and got another three in the fifth on two run homer by K. McCormack and a hard single by D. Jenkins.  Dulles had a tough day, leaving ten men on base and had several chances to break the game open.  B. Johnson had a great game at the plate with three hits and D. Jenkins had two hits in two at bats.  In the end, the breaks didn’t go to Dulles.  The team thanks all of the fans who made it to Charlottesville during the weekend and on Monday.  Congratulations to the team, and to coaches Payne and McCormack on a wonderful four days in Charlottesville!

Sun, July 22, 2007 - VA State Tournment Game #3: Central 5 - DLL American 4

DLL American lost its first game of all star play 5-4 today, but based on tie breakers advanced out of pool play as the number one seed for their pool.  At the end of pool play three teams were tied with records of 2-1, but based on runs allowed over the three games, Dulles gave up the least.  Central opened the game with a fury hitting two homers and getting five runs in the first two innings to make the score 5-0.  J. Delahaba came in as a reliever to end the second inning and shut Central down the rest of the way.  Dulles got on the board in the fourth inning when J. Delahaba hit a long homer to left scoring M. Seu to make the score 5-2.  C. Payne hit a single in the fifth scoring J. Salzano making it 5-3 and a homer by M. Lord in the sixth made it 5-4.  Lord paced the team with two hits.  Dulles plays Grottoes at noon on Monday.

Sat, July 21 - VA State Tournment Game #2: DLL American 11 – Cave Spring (Roanoke) 3

Solid pitching and the long ball ruled the day as Dulles American moved to 2-0 in the state tournament on Saturday.  M. Kennedy opened the game by getting hit by a pitch and C. Keevey singled to left.  Next up, M. Lord hit a long three run homer to make it 3-0.  K. McCormack unloaded on a long two run homer to right making the score 7-2 and hit a three run homer into the trees making it 10-2 in the next inning.  The team got the eleventh run in the fifth on a double by M. Lord, his third hit of the game.  C. Payne and B. Johnson knocked in a run each with singles, and D. Jenkins and J. Karasinski each had hits for Dulles.  M. Lord and C. Keevey each threw three innings in the win combining on a four hitter with Lord getting the win and Keevey shutting Cave Spring down to end the contest.

Fri, July 20 - VA State Tournment Game #1: DLL American 8 – Danville 5

The American squad continued their winning ways on Friday, July 20 winning a game that almost got away.  Danville’s pitcher kept Dulles at bay for nearly four innings yielding no runs, but reached the pitch limit and was pulled.  With one out in the fourth D. Jenkins and K. McCormack walked and J. Karasinski reached on a Danville miscue loading the bases.  M. Kennedy broke the game open with a grand slam down the left field line to make the score 4-0. K. McCormack threw Four and a third shut out innings giving up only two hits, but also reached his pitch limit.  Danville erupted for five runs over the last two innings making the score 5-4 in their favor heading to the bottom of the sixth.  C. Keevey opened the sixth with a long homer to right tying the game.  M. Lord and J. Salzano walked loading the bases for J. Delahaba who then hit a three run walk off homer to center ending the game.  C. Payne led the winners with two hits and played a solid third base.  The team continued flawless play in the field committing no errors.

Delahaba singled, and K. McCormack singled plating Salzano.  M. Kennedy then followed with a very long homer to left making it 4-0.  CL National got two runs in the fourth on four straight hits, but Lord settled down and J. Delahaba threw out a runner at home ending the inning.  The two runs scored by CL National were the first runs scored against DLL American in 19 innings.  Lord followed up with a long homer of his own in the fifth to make it 5-2.  M. Kennedy made a tough play to get the first out in the sixth and C. Keevey stabbed two straight liners at first to end the game.

Sat, July 7, 2007: DLLA 4 – DLLN 0

J. Salzano was the hero of the day on the mound and at the plate.  As a pitcher, he worked with catcher C. Payne and threw a complete game two hitter and never allowed a ball out of the infield the entire game.  He limited the Nationals to two singles and struck out four while walking only one batter.  He got eleven ground ball outs.  At the plate he blasted a two run homer to right center in the second inning and had a triple later in the game.  After a sharp liner to right field by D. Jenkins, M. Lord hit a two run homer in the first that opened the scoring.  Defense again was a major factor for the American team – sound defensive play has been a theme for this team in their three tournament victories.  Today’s defense was highlighted by M. Kennedy and J. Karasinski who were involved in over half of the team’s outs.  A. Powell took the loss for the National team, but struck out eight batters and had one of the team’s two hits.  He also made a tough catch in the outfield to rob D. Jenkins of extra bases in the fifth inning.

Fri, July 6, 2007: DLLA 3 – CLLLA 1

The American League team from Dulles continued its winning ways by upending the Central Loudoun National team 3-1.  J. Delahaba and C. Keevey pitched near flawless baseball limiting the opponents to four hits and one run.  The defense continued to make plays and was led by M. Kennedy, B. Johnson, and J. Salzano.  M. Lord’s solo homer put the team ahead for good in the fourth and M. Kennedy’s single plated Salzano for an insurance run in the fifth.

Thu, July 5, 2007: DLLA 3 – ULLLN 2 (seven innings)

DLL American got strong pitching and clutch hitting to win its first game of the District 16 tournament.  K. Lord closed the game out pitching three and a third innings of no hit ball while striking out six.  The team fielded flawlessly and got a couple of great plays by C. Keevey at first base.  C. Payne led the team with two hits.  B. Johnson hit what appeared to be a sure single but a great play by ULL’s short stop robbed Johnson of a hit but it was enough to push a run across for the DLL American team.  M. Kennedy’s double in the sixth put the game into extra innings and J. Salzano’s clutch hit put the team ahead in the seventh.

Tournament Format

For 2007, DLL will field five All-star teams to participate in Little League-sponsored tournaments. The DLL American League and National League will each field a team for the Majors (11/12) Tournament, and the 9/10 Tournament. There will also be a DLL American League team for the 10/11 Tournament.

This is DLL's third season in Little League District 16. Our DLL teams will be competing in District 16 along with teams from Central Loudoun Little League and Upper Loudoun Little League. The tournament is a round-robin format with the winner being crowned the District 16 champion. The round-robin games will be followed by an if-necessary playoff if there is more than 1 team with less than 2 losses.

The 10/11 and 9/10 tournaments end with the state championship. The Majors tournament continues with the state champion representing Virginia in the Southern Region Championship, held in TBD. The Southern Region champion will move to the Little League World Series, held in August in Williamsport, PA.

Tournament Rules

All tournaments will be played using the Little League Tournament Rules, as contained in the 2007 green book. There are considerable differences between tournament rules and regular-season rules. Managers, Coaches, Umpires, and Parents are advised to familiarize themselves with the differences.

Some of the main rule differences:

  • There is no continuous batter order
  • Minimum play is one at-bat AND play in the field for three consecutive defensive outs
  • If a team fails to meet minimum play for each player, they forfeit
  • Players may enter the game unlimited times; once they appear at a certain spot in the batting order they must appear at that same spot anytime they are in the game.
  • Once per inning, a player who is not currently in the line-up may be used as a Special Pinch Runner, which does not count as a substitution
  • 10 run rule is used
  • Pitching resting requirements are very different
