Virginia State Tournament Game #8 on Monday, July 31: DLLN 9 - Vienna National 2
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMEThe Dulles National 10/11 All-Stars are Virginia State Champions!!!!! Dulles National rebounded from their 1st loss of the Virginia State Tournament yesterday to defeat Vienna National 9-2 today and become Virginia State Champs.
The Dulles offense got going early in this game and never let up, scoring in 5 different innings and generating 10-hits and 9-runs. Zach Newell and Ty Percherke had multiple-hit games to lead the way for Dulles. Matthew Hough, Cam Miller, Carson Judd, Cam West and Blake Snider also collected key base-hits.
Dulles starting pitcher Zach Newell tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing Dulles to build a 5-0 lead before he gave way to hard-throwing reliever AJ Powell, who promptly struck out the 1st hitter he faced to end the 3rd inning, and then went on to yield only 2-hits over the final 3 innings.
Zach Newell started the top of the 1st for DLL with a line-drive base-hit to left-center. One out later, Ty Percherke drilled a double into the left-field corner to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Cam Miller followed with an RBI single, and then Carson Judd doubled hard to the fence in center to put Dulles up 3-0. With 2 outs, Cam West delivered a clutch base-hit to right-field to make it 4-0.
With the score still 4-0 in the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Dulles defense chipped in with a great play to stifle a potential Vienna rally. With no outs and a runner on 1st, Dulles left-fielder Blake Snider fielded a Vienna base-hit to left, noted the runner attempting to go from 1st to 3rd on the hit, and delivered a perfect throw to 3rd baseman Carson Judd. Carson applied the tag to record the out and then alertly fired to 2nd when he noticed the other Vienna runner attempting to advance. Second-baseman Chris Dec took Carson’s throw and got the tag-out to complete the double-play.
Dulles added a run in the top of the 3rd to make it 5-0. Matthew Hough and Ty Percherke hit consecutive base-hits to start the inning. Then, with 1 out, Carson Judd’s RBI ground-out brought Matthew home.
In the 4th, Dulles made it 6-0 when Cam West was hit by a pitch, advanced on Chris Dec’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on Zach Newell’s infield hit.
Dulles scored again to make it 7-0 in the 5th. Carson Judd and AJ Powell drew consecutive walks with 2-outs. Then pinch-runner Kyle Cassidy stole home on a wild-pitch.
Vienna got to 7-2 in the bottom of the 5th when they scored twice on a pair of walks and 2-hits, but second-baseman Chris Dec ended the rally and the inning when he ranged far to his right, up the middle, to back-hand a sure Vienna base-hit. With his momentum taking him toward 2nd, Chris turned an threw across his body in one motion to stretching first-baseman Zach Newell to nail the runner on a bang-bang play at 1st.
Dulles regained their 7-run lead when they scored twice in the top of the 6th on walks to Caleb Adams, Chris Dec and Matthew Hough, a bunt-single by Zach Newell, and an RBI ground-out by Cam Miller.
When AJ Powell struck-out the last batter in a scoreless Vienna 6th, the Dulles National 10/11 All-Stars were Virginia State Champions!!!!
Virginia State Tournament Game #7 on Sunday, July 30: DLLN 4 - Vienna National 10
The Dulles National 10/11 All-Stars, only 1 win away from their dream of becoming Virginia State Champions, instead suffered their 1st defeat of the Virginia State Tournament, falling to Vienna National 10-4. This sets up a rematch tomorrow between these same two teams for the state title.
Dominating starting pitching by Vienna National, combined with an atypical error/walk-filled performance by DLL gave Vienna an easy win.
Starter Carson Judd (3 innings) struck out the side in the bottom of the 1st after 2 straight Vienna hits followed a leadoff walk to put Vienna in front 1-0.
In the top of the 3rd, Zach Newell drew a 2-out walk for DLL. Matthew Hough followed with a sharp single to right-field. Ty Percherke then drilled an RBI single to right-center to bring Dulles even 1-1.
But Vienna National plated 6-runs in the bottom of the 4th without hitting the ball out of the infield, taking a commanding 7-1 lead. 4 walks, a Dulles error, and 2 bunt singles got the job done for Vienna.
Dulles got a run back in the 5th. Caleb Adams reached base on a grounder to 3rd. After a fielder’s choice, Zach Newell singled to center and Matthew Hough followed with an RBI ground-out to 2nd to make it 7-2.
Vienna stretched its lead to 10-2 with 3-runs in the bottom of the 5th before Dulles set the tone for the next game by putting a few hits together in the 6th to pull within 10-4. Will Sawyer singled. Carson Judd reached on a fielder’s choice and Cam West reached on a grounder to 3rd. Caleb Adams smacked a line-drive single to center to load the bases for Zach Newell, who delivered a 2-run single to right.
Dulles National and Vienna National will face each other again tomorrow morning. The winner of that contest will be Virginia’s State Champion.
Virginia State Tournament Game #6 on Friday, July 28: DLLN 2 - Cave Spring American 1
The Dulles National 10/11 All-Stars defeated Cave Spring American 2-1 today in the finals of the winners-bracket in the Virginia State All-Star Tournament. With the win, Dulles advanced to the Championship Game.
Pitchers Zach Newell (3 innings) and AJ Powell (3 innings) teamed on a dominating 4-hitter for Dulles and allowed only 2 walks while striking out 9 batters.
Matthew Hough and Cam Miller had 2-hits each for Dulles. Caleb Adams had the only other DLL hit, as the Cave Spring starting-pitcher went the distance and held DLL to only 5-hits.
Cave Spring got their only run of the game on a solo-homer in the 2nd inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Dulles answered in the home half of the 2nd to even the score at 1-1. With 2 outs, Will Sawyer reached on a Cave Spring throwing error. Will then came all the way around to score on Cam West’s double to deep left-field.
DLL took the lead for good in the bottom half of the 4th. Cam Miller doubled to left-center and Carson Judd walked. Pinch-runner Cam West advanced to 3rd on a wild-pitch and scored on Caleb Adams’ infield hit to make it 2-1.
AJ Powell fired bullets through 3-innings of scoreless relief to secure the win for DLL.
DLL will face the winner of tomorrow’s game between Cave Spring American and Vienna National. Dulles now needs just 1 more win to be State-Champs. DLL’s opponent in the finals, on the other hand, will have to beat DLL twice in order to win the tournament.
Virginia State Tournament Game #5 on Thursday, July 27: DLLN 7 - Huguenot 1
The Dulles National 10/11 All-Stars stayed red-hot in the Virginia State Tournament, defeating Huguenot 7-1 to advance to the finals of the winners-bracket. Dulles is now a perfect 5-0 in the tournament (3-0 in pool-play and 2-0 in double-elimination bracket play).
Starter Carson Judd (3 innings) and Ty Percherke (3 innings) combined to limit Huguenot to 5-hits and only 1-run while striking out 6 batters. Carson held Huguenot scoreless through 3-innings, facing only 12 batters.
The DLL offense was led by Cam “Big Daddy” Miller who hit 2 home-runs in the game, a solo-shot to left-center in the 3rd and mammoth 3-run bomb over the trees beyond the fence in center in the 4th. DLL’s Will Sawyer had great swings all day and collected 3 hits.
Dulles National struck first, going up 1-0 in the top of the 2nd on a base-hit by Will Sawyer and a perfect bunt-single by Cam West.
In the 3rd, DLL went up 3-0 on Cam Miller’s solo home-run to left-center, Will Sawyer’s double to the fence in right-field and Blake Snider’s RBI base-hit down the left-field line.
Then, in the 4th, Dulles broke the game open. Zach Newell started the inning with a base-hit to left. An infield hit by Matthew Hough, a walk to Ty Percherke and a throwing error by Huguenot put Dulles up 4-0. Cam Miller then put the game out of reach when he crushed a 1-1 pitch high over the trees beyond the fence in center for a 3-run homer, his 2nd home-run of the day, making it 7-0.
Huguenot scored once in the bottom of the 4th to make it 7-1, but Dulles pitcher Ty Percherke was in command the rest of the way.
The win advances Dulles National to the finals of the winners-bracket against Cave Spring American, which is also undefeated at 5-0.
Virginia State Tournament Game #4 on Wednesday, July 26: DLLN 6 - SYA East 5 (7 innings)
The Dulles National 10/11 All-Stars stayed unbeaten (4-0) in the Virginia State Tournament by stopping SYA East 6-5 in a thrilling 7-inning battle.
Zach Newell (3 innings), AJ Powell (3 innings) and Carson Judd (1 inning) pitched for Dulles and limited SYA East to only 5-hits over 7-innings.
The opportunistic DLL National offense was lead by Cam Miller, who had 2 base-hits, including the eventual game-winner in the 7th inning. Matthew Hough, Blake Snider and Chris Dec also had hits for Dulles.
Dulles managed a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st without getting a hit. Zach Newell, Ty Percherke and Cam Miller drew 1st inning walks and 3-runs scored on errant pitches and throws. SYA East answered with a run in the bottom of the 1st to make it 3-1 after 1-inning of play.
SYA East grabbed the lead 4-3 in the 3rd with a 3-run homer that followed a bunt single and a DLL fielding miscue.
But Dulles was unfazed and answered right back in the top of the 4th. Caleb Adams walked and Chris Dec ripped a solid single to center. Dulles tied the score 4-4 when SYA East couldn’t complete the throw to 1st on Zach Newell’s grounder to 3rd. Matthew Hough’s grounder to shortstop brought in another run, giving Dulles the lead 5-4.
Key defensive plays kept Dulles in the lead 5-4through 5-innings of play. In the 4th, a liner off the foot of Dulles pitcher AJ Powell settled in the grass between the mound and 3rd base. Dulles 3rd baseman Carson Judd was lightning quick, diving on the ball and coming up throwing just in time to nail the runner at 1st. Then, in the 5th inning, right-fielder Kyle Cassidy made the catch of the tournament when he sprinted full-speed toward the line in right-field and made an unbelievable diving, tumbling catch in foul-territory on a long fly-ball down the line that had tailed out of play.
In the SYA East 6th, Dulles thought they had won when shortstop Matthew Hough made a great play on a grounder to deep short with 2-outs. But the hustling SYA runner was ruled safe on a bang-bang play at 1st and the tying run was able to score from 3rd.
But again, Dulles answered right back. Matthew Hough started the DLL 7th with a single, advanced to 2nd on an errant pitch and scored on Cam Miller’s laser-shot RBI base-hit to the fence in left-center to give Dulles the lead 6-5.
SYA East threatened again in the bottom of the 7th, but shortstop Matthew Hough and second-baseman Chris Dec turned a beautiful 6-4-3 double-play to end the game and give Dulles National a thrilling victory.
Up next for Dulles National will be a winners-bracket contest vs. Huguenot.
Virginia State Tournament Game #3 on Tuesday, July 25: DLLN 7 - Vienna National 4

Middle relievers AJ Powell and Zach Newell each chipped in with a scoreless inning of relief. Carson Judd then closed out the 6th, holding off a late Vienna rally to protect the win. Dulles pitchers scattered 10 Vienna National hits, struck-out 5 batters and walked only 2.
The Dulles offense was sparked by Matthew Hough and Will Sawyer, who had 2-hits apiece.
Dulles jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. Matthew Hough singled and scored on Cam Miller’s clutch 2-out double. But Vienna answered right back in the bottom of the 1st, tying the score 1-1 on 2 base-hits.
In the top of the 2nd, DLL National took a 2-1 lead when Will Sawyer singled, Cam West was hit by a pitch, Blake Snider walked to load the bases and Zach Newell stroked an RBI base-hit to right, scoring pinch-runner Caleb Adams.
Dulles didn’t score in the 4th inning, but Chris Dec had the at-bat of the game when he fouled-off 10 consecutive pitches from Vienna’s tiring starting-pitcher, before lining a single to center.
Dulles added a run off of the Vienna bullpen in the 5th to make it 3-1. With 1 out, Carson Judd was hit by a pitch. Pinch-runner Kyle Cassidy advanced on a ground-out and scored on an RBI single to center by Caleb Adams.

In the inning, Kyle Cassidy was hit by a pitch and Zach Newell and Will Sawyer collected walks to set up run-scoring infield hits by Matthew Hough and Carson Judd.

Virginia State Tournament Game #1 on Sunday, July 23: DLLN 3 - Louisa County 2
The Dulles National 10/11 All-Stars began competition in the Virginia State Tournament with a solid performance last night, winning 3-2 over the District 14 representative, Louisa, in the opening game of Pool Play for both teams.
This one was a pitching duel. Starter Ty Percherke (3 innings) and Carson Judd (3 innings) combined on a 4-hitter and racked up 11strikeouts to give the DLL National offense a chance to win. The Louisa pitchers kept pace, limiting DLL to only 5 hits, 2 by Ty Percherke and 1 each by Carson Judd, Zach Newell and Matthew Hough. Game reports for VA District 16 All-Star Tournament:
Tuesday, July 18 Playoff Game at Crittenden Park: DLLN 11 - CLLL American 4
After defeating Central Loudoun American 9-4 on Monday in the 1st game of a best-of-three series, the Dulles National 10/11 All-Stars found themselves 1 win away from a District 16 title. Any doubts about DLL National’s ability to duplicate their Game 1 effort were erased very early in Game 2 on Tuesday. Dulles sent 11 hitters to the plate in a decisive 7-run 1st inning, then cruised to an 11-4 win and the District 16 Championship.
With 1 out in the bottom of the 1st, Matthew Hough was hit by a pitch and Ty Percherke walked. Cam Miller, Carson Judd, Will Sawyer and Cam West ripped consecutive singles to get the home crowd going and put Dulles up 4-0. When Central Loudoun couldn’t hold onto Kyle Cassidy’s sinking shot to center or Zach Newell’s grounder to 2nd, DLL National had extended its lead to 7-0.
Dulles pitcher Carson Judd kept CLLL American scoreless through the 1st 2 innings, allowing only 2 base-runners. Carson was backed by several fine defensive plays. In the 1st, Zach Newell snagged a sharp liner at his first-base position and center-fielder Kyle Cassidy tracked down a deep fly-ball in left-center. In the 2nd, Cam West made a nice adjustment, making a play from second-base on a grounder that was originally headed up the middle, but then changed direction when it was deflected by the pitcher. Later in the 2nd, with a man on 3rd base, shortstop Matthew Hough’s play on a grounder to deep short saved a run and ended the inning.
DLL National made it 8-0 in the bottom half of the 2nd when Ty Percherke’s leadoff single was followed by Cam Miller’s base-hit and Carson Judd’s RBI single to left-center.
Central Loudoun cut the lead to 8-3 in the top of the 3rd, scoring 3 runs on 3 hits and a rare Dulles fielding error. The hustling play of Caleb Adams and Blake Snider in the outfield limited the damage. Then, Ty Percherke turned in a great defensive play, charging from his third-base position on a slow-roller and nailing the runner at 1st for the 3rd out of the inning, stranding 2 CLLL runners in scoring position.
DLL National answered right back in the bottom of the 3rd. With 1 out and Zach Newell on 1st with an infield hit, Ty Percherke doubled to right-center, Cam Miller stroked an opposite field double to left on an off-speed pitch, and Carson Judd doubled hard to left-center to make it 11-3.
Ty Percherke came on to pitch the final 3-innings for DLL National, facing only 10 batters and limiting CLLL American to only 1 run and 1 base-hit.
In the top of the 4th, after a Central Loudoun leadoff single, DLL National came up with a couple of defensive gems. First, Chris Dec made a great play in the hole at second-base to nab the lead-runner going to 2nd. Then, shortstop Matthew Hough snatched a grounder that was headed into center-field, stepped on 2nd for 1 out, and fired to 1st to complete an inning-ending double-play.
Dulles conceded the game’s final run in the 6th-inning when a Central Loudoun runner was allowed to score from 3rd so that another runner trying to take 2nd base could be caught stealing in a perfectly executed run-down.
Dulles National now advances to the Virginia State Tournament, which starts this Sunday (7/23) in Woodbridge, VA.
Monday, July 17 at Crittenden Park: DLLN 9 - CLLL American 4
With both teams unbeaten through their 1st 3 games of the District 16 10/11 All-Star tournament, Dulles National and Central Loudoun American faced each other last night in Game 1 of a best-of-three series that will determine the District 16 champion. DLL National struck first and grabbed the opening game of the series, riding a 5-run 1st inning to take a 9-4 victory and improve their record to 4-0.
Zach Newell doubled to the fence in right-field to get DLL National started in the top of the 1st. Matthew Hough’s sharp single to right, followed by Ty Percherke’s RBI ground-out made it 1-0. A rare fielding error by CLLL American on Cam Miller’s infield fly allowed a 2nd DLL run to score and kept the rally going. Carson Judd walked and Will Sawyer singled to left to load the bases for Cam West. Cam smacked an RBI single to center to make it 3-0. With the bases still loaded, CLLL American got a force-out at home for the 2nd out of the inning, but consecutive walks to Kyle Cassidy and Zach Newell brought in 2 more runs to make it 5-0.
CLLL American answered right back in the bottom of the 1st. With 2 outs and a runner on 1st, CLLL American hit back-to-back homers to make it 5-3 and turn the momentum in their favor. But DLL National would not back down. Zach Newell came on to pitch with 2 outs in the CLLL half of the 1st and shut the door, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, and allowing only 3 base-runners. AJ Powell threw the final 2 innings for DLL National, exhibiting exceptional control and a plus fast-ball and yielding only one unearned run in the bottom of the 6th.
With the CLLL American offense held in check, the DLL National hitters reasserted control of the game in the top of the 4th inning. Carson Judd got things started with a single to left. Will Sawyer singled inside the line in short left to put DLL National back in business with nobody out and Caleb Adams at the plate. Caleb lined a crisp RBI single to center to make it 6-3 and give DLL National a little breathing room. Chris Dec’s well-placed bunt single loaded the bases. Later, with 1 out, DLL National cashed in 2 more runs on Zach Newell’s RBI base-on-balls and Matthew Hough’s RBI ground-out.
DLL National took their 8-3 lead into the 6th inning and added a little insurance when Matthew Hough tripled to the fence in right-center and scored on Ty Percherke’s solid RBI single to center. CLLL American got an unearned run in the bottom of the 6th to come within 9-4, but a pair of nice defensive plays by Ty Percherke at first-base and a strikeout by AJ Powell, his 3rd strikeout in 2 innings, ended the CLLL rally and gave DLL National the win.
DLL National and CLLL American will face-off again on Tuesday, July 18th at Crittenden Park at 6pm.
Saturday, July 15 at Crittenden Park: DLLN 7 - DLLA 4
DLL National ran their record to 3-0 in the District 16 10/11 All-Star tournament with a 7-4 win over a talented, well-coached DLL American club. Limited to only 4 hits by solid DLL American pitching, DLL National capitalized on their opportunities, using a 3-run-homer by Carson Judd and a Grand Slam by Will Sawyer to stay unbeaten. Cam West and Ty Percherke also had hits for DLL National.
DLL National pitchers Ty Percherke (4+ innings) and Carson Judd (2 innings) held DLL American to only 3 runs and did not walk a batter in the game. They were backed by solid defensive plays by Matt Hough at shortstop, Chris Dec at second-base, Zach Newell at first-base and Caleb Adams in right. Ty Percherke also helped his own cause by recording 5 put-outs from his pitcher position.
DLL National struck first, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Matt Hough and Ty Percherke reached on consecutive infield miscues. Later, with 2 outs in the inning, Carson Judd got DLL National on the board by launching a huge shot deep over the fence in center for a 3-run homer.
But DLL American would battle back and take the lead. A solo-homer in the 3rd inning got DLL American on the board. Then, 4 consecutive hits (2 singles and 2 doubles) to start the 5th inning pushed DLL American into the lead at 4-3.
DLL National answered right back in the bottom of the 5th. Matt Hough walked to start the inning. Ty Percherke’s infield single placed runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. Matt’s heads-up steal of 3rd base on DLL American’s attempted pickoff at first-base gave DLL National runners at the corners. Cam Miller drew a walk to load the bases. A force-out at home on a grounder to second, followed by a strikeout, left DLL National with 2 outs and in need of a big hit. Will Sawyer would deliver. Will cleared the bases with his 1st homer, a dramatic 2-out game-winning Grand Slam home-run over the left-field fence that gave DLL National a come-from-behind 7-4 victory.
DLL National plays its 4th game on Monday, July 17th against unbeaten Central Loudoun American.
Wednesday, July 12 at Crittenden Park: DLLN 12 - ULLL American 1
The Dulles National 10/11 All-Stars improved their record to 2-0 with a 12-1 victory over Upper Loudoun American in a game that was much closer than the final score indicates. With a 2-1 lead entering the 5th inning, DLL National plated 10 runs to take a commanding lead and claim their 2nd consecutive victory to start the District 16 All-Star tournament.
Cam Miller (3 innings) and AJ Powell (2 innings) threw a combined 3-hitter for DLL National and allowed only 1 run while striking out 8 Upper Loudoun hitters. They were supported by a 12-hit offensive attack, led by Zach Newell, Ty Percherke, Cam Miller and Carson Judd, who all turned in multiple-hit games.
DLL National took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Blake Snider walked to start the inning. Caleb Adams pinch-ran for Blake and beat the throw to 2nd on Kyle Cassidy’s bunt. After Chris Dec’s bunt and a ground-out, Kyle scored when Upper Loudoun was unable to make the play on Matthew Hough’s grounder.
After Upper Loudoun evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the 3rd inning, DLL National answered right back in the top of the 4th to take a 2-1 lead. With 1 out, Caleb Adams walked, advanced to 3rd on Zach Newell’s double to right-field, and scored on Matthew Hough’s RBI ground-out to 3rd.
Cam Miller singled for DLL National to start the 5th inning and Carson Judd followed with a double to deep left-center. Then, after consecutive infield fly-outs, the offense erupted! Kyle Cassidy, pinch-running for Cam Miller, got things started by swiping home on a delayed steal. AJ Powell walked and Caleb Adams singled to load the bases. Zach Newell followed with an RBI base-hit to left. Matthew Hough drew a walk to score another run. Ty Percherke’s 2-run single to center made it 7-1. Cam Miller delivered an RBI base-hit to left-center to keep the rally going and then Carson Judd provided the big blow with a 2-run double off the fence in right-field. Will Sawyer walked and Cam West stroked a sharp single into right-field, driving in 2 more runs to make it 12-1.
DLL National plays its 3rd game on Saturday morning against DLL American.
Tuesday, July 11 at Crittenden Park: DLLN 3 - CLLL National 2
The Dulles National 10/11 all-star team opened their District 16 tournament with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Central Loudoun National all-stars. The decisive run was scored in the bottom of the 6th inning on a perfectly executed safety-squeeze bunt by Kyle Cassidy. Carson Judd led off the 6th with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Will Sawyer then moved the runner to 3rd with a ground ball before Kyle laid a bunt down scoring Carson.
DLL National started the scoring in the first inning. Zach Newell and Matthew Hough led off the inning with singles. After an infield out, two runs were scored on a Cam Miller rocket to right center field that went for a double.
Ty Percherke and Carson Judd each pitched 3 innings and held the Central Loudoun team to 2 runs and only 4 hits, while walking only 1 batter in 6 innings.

Thursday, June 29 @ Haske Field: ULLL American 8, DLLA 3
A shaky, nervous first inning DLLA behind by six runs against Upper Loudoun American. Blake Ratliffe took the mound for DLLA in the second and shut down ULLL, but in the end, DLLA was simply slow out of the blocks in game one. Their first two innings at the plate were uneventful, and the third inning was quiet until Travis Brocke hustled out a botched grounder in the infield. Alex Sutherland hustled out a botched play in the fourth, and then Cole Taggert blasted a single showing there was still life in the DLLA dugout. Doug Paccione took the mound in the 3rd and 4th innings for DLLA allowing only two runs to score after striking out two. The fifth inning was quiet at the plate for DLLA, but Cole fortunately shut down ULLLA when he took the mound in the fifth. Alex Sutherland started off the sixth inning with a walk, and Cole Taggert followed suit. Blake Ratliff came to the plate and advanced both runners, before Alex Iglesias knocked both Alex and Cole in. Although DLLA finished strongly, it was ultimately not enough with the game finishing 8-3 in favor of Upper Loudoun.
Friday, June 30 @ Round Hill Center: DLLA 10, CLLL American 0
The bruised egos of DLLA were visible as the Big Red came out firing Friday evening against Central Loudoun American. Kyle “Sparky” Wrighte started off the game with a single, followed by an Alex Sutherland single, and then a walk to Cole Taggart. A base hit by Mitch Braumann scored the first run for DLLA. Blake Ratliffe and Alex Iglesias followed with a pair of triples. The DLLA rhythm continued as Doug Paccione earned a single, and then Michael Martinez put on bunting clinic with a picture perfect drag. It was obvious already that a different DLLA team had come to play. The top of the order came up again and Sparky & Alex got on again before a relief pitcher took the mound. Cole earned an RBI when Sparky scored off his fly ball to left field. It was 9-0 at the end of the first.
Mitch Braumann make quick work on the mound in the first striking out one batter and retiring two more.
Although the DLLA did not score any more runs in the second, they did score another run in the third when Michael started off the inning with a shot to left field, which was followed by Devon Perez’s base hit up the middle. Alex notched another hit on his belt, and then Cole patiently earned a walk and RBI giving DLLA their tenth run.
Chase Beck took the mound for DLLA in the second inning, striking out two. Devon Perez came out firing with nothing but pure fastballs in the third inning, striking out two as well. Matt McDermott led the defense with two excellent innings at catcher. The game ended early in the fourth when Blake closed out the game striking out two batters. Jake Maffe ended the game by throwing out a Central Loudoun runner from left field.
Saturday, July 1 @ Round Hill Center: DLLA 6, DLLN 5
All of Dulles Little League would have been proud of the all star performances put up by the players from both of these teams. DLL American’s Kyle “Sparky” Wrighte started off the game with a base hit, and then advanced to second on Alex Sutherland’s base hit. Both runners advanced on a steal, and Sparky soon scored DLLA’s first run. Mitch Brauman and Blake Ratliff both used their keen eye to walk, and then Alex Iglesias stroked one to score Mitch. DLLA ended the inning with 2 runs. The damage would have been much worse except that DLL National turned a textbook 4-6-3 double play, led by Kyle Palmer at second base. Kyle closed out the inning with another outstanding defensive play at second base. The quality of DLL baseball was obvious!
In the bottom of the1st inning, DLL National came right back with 3 runs to take the lead. In the top of the 2nd inning, Sparky got a base hit up the middle. Alex Sutherland walked, and then Cole Taggart earned another RBI after scoring Sparky again.
In the bottom half, DLLN manufactured two more runs during the inning, but DLLA went into the top of the third with great momentum after an ESPN worthy web gem. Sparky Wrighte tracked down a base hit in the right field gap and hit the cutoff man, Alex Sutherland, who turned and made a beautiful throw from the outfield grass all the way to home plate. Michael Martinez stood firmly and made the exciting tag at home plate for the third out.
In the 3rd inning, Matt McDermott, Chase Beck, and Jake Maffee all came into the game along with Doug Paccione who was on the mound. Doug controlled both the 3rd and 4th innings. DLLN’s pitcher, Dylan Collins, was also outstanding, as he held DLLA to no runs for the next few innings.
The score remained 5-3 in favor of the Nationals at the top of the 5th, when Cole Taggart got on base for DLLA. Mitch then got a single advancing Cole and then Alex Iglesias walked. The bases were loaded when Doug Paccione hit a single scoring Cole. Michael then hit a shot up the middle scoring both Mitch and Alex. The Big Red was not done yet, as Travis Brocke hit one up the middle as well. In the end, DLLA scored 3 runs, taking the lead 6-5.
In the bottom of the 5th, Cole Taggart took the mound. Cole did not allow any runs and struck out one batter while Alex Iglesias make a great diving play to make the 3rd out in the fifth inning.
Blake Ratliff got a hit during the 6th inning to keep the DLLA bats alive, but, DLLA could not manage any further insurance runs. It came down to Cole closing out the game in the sixth. Alex Iglesias made another diving play at first base, which was followed by another diving play at shortstop by Blake Ratliff to close out the game. DLL National had played extremely well and could have easily taken the game. It was a game that demonstrated again the high quality of baseball played in DLL. And, the high quality of sportsmanship and friendship between the coaches and players.
Wednesday, July 6: DLLA 2, CLLN 1
The Dulles Little League American team came in well rested after the 4th of July break and the light rain didn't seem to bother the team or its supporters. The game was marked by defensive gems. In the bottom of the first inning, Michael Martinez caught a fly ball in short right field for the 2nd out and then threw the ball perfectly to home for an incredible play at the plate by Matt McDermott for the 3rd out. CLLN scored one run in the 2nd inning. Kyle “Sparky” Wrighte led of the 3rd inning with his second walk of the game. Michael Martinez got an infield single. Alex Sutherland then hit a perfect ball over the short stop to get an RBI and score Sparky. Cole Taggart then hit a double down the left field line to bring Martinez in. Mitchell Braumann was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out, but Dulles was held to no runs scored.
In the 4th inning, Cole Taggart at short stop earned an ESPN WebGem by making a diving catch in short centerfield. After two runners reached base, the next batter rifled a line drive off the leg of pitcher Alex Iglesias. Devon Perez ran to short left field to retrieve the ball and threw to Michael Martinez at home. Michael made another All- Star play by tagging the runner at home, and the score remained at 2-1. Jake Maffee nearly had his second outfield assist of the tournament on a great throw from left field, and both Jake and Chase Beck battled CLLN’s pitcher deep into the count.
The CLLN team held the DLLA team to no runs in the 5th inning. Blake Ratliff went to the mound and held CLLN in the 5th. The rain started to get stronger as the final inning began. Martinez got on base with a single, and advanced to 2nd on an error. However, the DLLA team was not able to put more runs on the board. The anxiety was building as the CLLN team came up to bat. Blake looked strong and confident on the mound. Alex Iglesias made another outstanding play on a ground ball to first. Ratliff struck out the 2nd batter, and then Alex Sutherland threw to Alex Iglesias. at 1st for the last out of the game. The game ended with a score of 2-1. Both teams had played nearly flawless baseball, and both represented their leagues very well.
Friday, July 7 @ Haske Field: ULLL National 12, DLLA 2
In the final game of the tournament, DLL American ran out of gas against the eventual champion, Upper Loudoun National. The highlights of the game for DLL were two: Kyle "Sparky" Wrighte catching a fly ball in right field and then throwing out the runner tagging up from third base; and, Mitchell Braumann stealing home plate, after Jake Maffee battled to stay alive in the count, to keep DLL in the game. DLL American struggled through two big innings for UL National. At the conclusion of the tournament, DLL's players learned the old agage: keep the other team from big innings. DLL American played 24 innings in the tournament -- in 3 of those innings it gave up 16 runs; in the other 21 innings, it gave up only 9 runs. The coaches and parents were proud: of the effort the players put out for the entire practice and tournament schedule; the chemistry that developed on the team; and, the amount of growth in the players' abilities. The players left with alot of enthusiasm for the fall and spring DLL seasons!

Tournament Format
DLL will field six All-star teams to participate in Little League-sponsored tournaments. The DLL American League and National League will each field a team for the Majors (11/12) Tournament, the 11 Tournament and the 9/10 Tournament.
This is DLL's second season in Little League District 16. Our DLL teams will be competing in District 16 along with teams from Central Loudoun Little League and Upper Loudoun Little League. The tournament is a round-robin format with the winner being crowned the District 16 champion. The round-robin games will be followed by an if-necessary playoff if there is more than 1 team with less than 2 losses.
The 10/11 and 9/10 tournaments end with the state championship. The Majors tournament continues with the state champion representing Virginia in the Southern Region Championship, held in TBD. The Southern Region champion will move to the Little League World Series, held in August in Williamsport, PA.
Tournament Rules
All tournaments will be played using the Little League Tournament Rules, as contained in the 2005 green book. There are considerable differences between tournament rules and regular-season rules. Managers, Coaches, Umpires, and Parents are advised to familiarize themselves with the differences.
Some of the main rule differences:
There is no continuous batter order Minimum play is one at-bat AND play in the field for three consecutive defensive outs If a team fails to meet minimum play for each player, they forfeit Players may enter the game unlimited times; once they appear at a certain spot in the batting order they must appear at that same spot anytime they are in the game. Once per inning, a player who is not currently in the line-up may be used as a Special Pinch Runner, which does not count as a substitution 10 run rule is used Pitching resting requirements are very different
