2004 All-Stars

2004 was a good year for DLL All-Star teams. This page presents a recap of some of the notable accomplishments.

American 9/10 in the State Tournament

The Dulles American 9/10 represented District 3 in the State Tournament at Bridgewater and had a good showing, ending up as the next-to-last team eliminated.

Full tournament coverage is available from the host tournament site. Also see the tournament bracket which is kept updated with results, box scores and game play-by-play.

American won the honor of playing in this tournament by sweeping the Area 1 tournament and going on to take the district title.

Game Reports

Friday July 16 - Opening Round

Dulles American: Bye

The tournament got underway today; Dulles American has a bye into the second round of the winner's bracket.

Saturday July 17 - Winner's Bracket Second Round

Dulles American 7, Essex County 4

Backed by a great defense, Connor Jessop held Essex County scoreless through 5 innings and helped Dulles American win its first State tournament game 7-4. Tyler Mocabee came in to get the final out in the sixth via strikeout. Matt Malacane caught all 6 innings for the American all-stars. The hitting effort was led by Dylan Chapman (2-2, BB), Connor Jessop (3-4) and Kevin Wood (1-2, BB).

Dulles American plays Fort Hunt in its next game tomorrow night at 5 PM.

Sunday July 18 - Winner's Bracket Semi-Final

Dulles American 2, Fort Hunt 0

Dulles American advanced to the finals of the winner's bracket in the State tournament today with a 2-0 victory over a very tough Fort Hunt team. Backed by exceptional defense (no errors), Tyler Mocabee threw a 2-hit complete game shutout. Fielding gems were turned in by Kevin Wood (2 assists), Patrick Young (5 putouts), Connor Jessop (2 assists/2 putouts), Dylan Chapman (3 putouts), and Connor Yost (1 putout).

Although DLL only had 2 hits, they made the most of their effort. Connor Jessop led off the 4th with a single and scored on a Matt Malacane triple. Matt's heads up, aggressive, baserunning allowed him to score on the play when a slight bobble occurred in the Fort Hunt outfield.

The American all-stars play in the Finals of the winner's bracket against SYA - East Monday at 1 PM.

Monday July 19 - Winner's Bracket Final

Dulles American 0, SYA East 5

With the loss to SYA East, Dulles American moves to the Loser's Bracket playing Huguenot Tuesday at 10 AM. If DLL wins this, they will play against SYA East at 1:00PM. They will need to beat SYA East twice for the championship, so if they win that game, they play them again Wednesday 7/21 at 10:30 AM.

Tuesday July 20- Loser's Bracket Final

Dulles American 2, Hugenot 7

Dulles American lost its final game to Hugenot. Hugenot went on to play SYA East in the championship game, losing to SYA East 2 - 0, making SYA East the tournament champions.

What an effort - we're all proud of you, Dulles American 9/10 All-Stars!!

American 9/10 Takes District Crown

The Dulles American 9/10 team, District 3 Northern Division winner, defeated Elkton, the Southern Division winner, 7-2 in a come-from-behind win at Freedom Park in Leesburg on Friday, July 9. Because Elkton had carried a loss forward from the semi-finals, this gave Dulles American the District title.

An exceptional pitching effort, great defense, and aggressive base-running highlighted this "team effort" win over a very good Elkton team. Tyler Mocabee pitched all six innings for the win.

American will play in the State Tournament in Bridgewater starting Saturday, July 17.

Format

DLL will field six All-star teams to participate in Little League-sponsored tournaments. The DLL American League and National League will each field a team for the Majors International Tournament, the 11 tournamant and the 9/10 Tournament. This is the first year that there has been an official LL-sponsored tournamant for 11s.

For all three tournaments, the DLL teams will first compete in the District 3 Area 1 tournament against teams from Central Loudoun Little League and Upper Loudoun Little League. The Area 1 tournaments use a round-robin format with each team guaranteed to play five games. For a team to be eliminated from winning the tournament, it must lose two games. To handle cases where either no team has less than two losses or more than one team has less than two losses at the end of round-robin play, there is a provision for playoff games following the round-robin portion. For instance, if team A finishes the round-robin with a record of 5-0, and team B finishes with 4-1, team B is not yet eliminated because it only has one loss. A playoff game would be held between A and B. If A wins, B now has two losses and A is the champion. If B wins the play-off game, a second playoff game would be held, with the winner advancing.

One team from the Area 1 tournaments will emerge to face the winner of Area 2 for the Northern Division championship of District 3. The Northern Division winners will play the Southern Division winners for the District 3 Championship. The District winners will advance to the Virginia State Championship.

The 11 and 9/10 tournaments ends with the state championship. The Majors tournament continues with the state champion representing Virgina in the Southern Region Championship, held in St. Petersburg, FL. The Southern Region champion will move to the Little League World Series, held in August in Williamsport, PA.

Tournament Rules

All tournaments will be played using the Little League Tournament Rules, as contained in the 2003 green book. There are considerable differences between tournament rules and regular-season rules. Managers, Coaches, Umpires, and Parents are advised to familiarize themselves with the differences. See this chart for a summary of the tournament rules.

Some of the main rule differences:

  • There is no continuous batter order
  • Minimum play is one at-bat AND play in the field for three consecutive defensive outs
  • If a team fails to meet minimum play for each player, they forfeit
  • Players may enter the game unlimited times; once they appear at a certain spot in the batting order they must appear at that same spot anytime they are in the game.
  • Once per inning, a player who is not currently in the line-up may be used as a Special Pinch Runner, which does not count as a substitution
  • 10 run rule is used
  • Pitching resting requirements are very different

Dulles Little League's objective is to enrich our children by providing them with the positive experience of teamwork, personal achievement, and excellence through participation in our baseball program.
